A line-up of ambitious classics and exciting new works, including a ground-breaking masterpiece, a gritty revival of a classic musical, a powerful Pulitzer Prize winner, and a documentary-style portrait of an American tragedy.

(North Adams) - The Fine and 表演艺术 (FPA) Department at Massachusetts College 文科学院(MCLA)宣布了它的 2019-2020戏剧项目季. It will include a classic story of desire, choice, and class warfare, a post modern take on a classic musical, a darkly comic fable about family wounds, and a deeply 复杂的肖像悲惨的谋杀.

The season performances will be in MCLA’s 小学的剧院, and will feature discussions with local experts, casts and creatives following all second Saturday evening performances. Critical Response Sessions based on Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process will be held with audience, cast and creatives following each production.

August Strindberg’s ground-breaking masterpiece is brought to life in a new version by David Eldridge, from a literal translation by Charlotte Barslund. 伯爵很漂亮 daughter, 朱莉小姐, feels trapped and alone, while his handsome and rebellious footman, 琼对自己的处境感到沮丧. 在一个晚上，激情是 点燃后很快就失控了. The play will be directed by David Lane (艺术ist-in-Residence), and will feature costumes designed by Declan McDermott ’21 (剧院 and 艺术管理 major), scenery designed by Jeremy Winchester (Assistant Professor, 剧院), and lights designed by Jarret Garland ' 20(戏剧和心理学专业).

Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields, and Neil Simon’s musical adaptation of the Federico Fellini 电影 卡比里亚之夜, where the diehard romantic dancehall girl, Charity Hope Valentine, navigates her 人生和爱情中走过不幸的路. Director and choreographer, Laura Standley (Associate Professor, 剧院), brings a postmodern take to the show, highlighting the emotional predicament women in poverty face as they strive for a life of personal 自由、尊严和尊重.

With scenic and lighting designs by Jeremy Winchester (Assistant Professor, 剧院) and costumes designed by our new faculty in the Fine and 表演艺术 department, Michaela Petrovich (Assistant Professor, 剧院).

The documentary-style portrait of an American tragedy by Moises Kauffman and members 构造剧场计划. 在10月. 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. 五个 weeks later, Moisés Kaufman and fellow members 构造剧场计划 went to Laramie, and over the course of the next year, conducted more than 200 interviews 和镇上的人一起. From these interviews they wrote the play, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder.

Guest artist, Sara Katzoff (艺术ist-in-Residence) returns to direct this deeply moving and complex portrait of a murder, that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.
